ChatGPT has infiltrated my life. It is in trend right now, and I hear it from my clients that they use ChatGPT for help with jobs, help with dating, help with relationships, and even breakups.
I think AI for therapy is an uncharted territory and a very powerful tool when used right, but also can be harmful without supervision from a professional.
1) I think using ChatGPT for beginning and research for basic information when having relationship anxiety or dating anxiety can be useful. It should be the start, but not the end. It becomes problematic when clients and people rely on it 100% and do not seek other sources or further help, because our mind is very complex and illogical. AI is good at gathering information, but it is not at the stage that can be intuitive and tailor to their needs based on their history.
2) I think there is also confidentiality, AI gathers information based on conversations and data gathered from other people using ChatGPT. However, every human experience is different, and we cannot be placed or overgeneralized.
3) Take ChatGPT with a grain of salt; it is still learning and gathering data, but it does not mean it is completely true if you are using it for relationship advice. I worry that people not in a good mental state, such as not in touch with reality or having a lot of paranoia, can be easily persuaded to do what ChatGPT suggests or believe that AI is all-knowing and powerful because it does offer very empathetic human responses.
4) Use ChatGPT as a template, but do not copy and paste to people you want to ghost or break up with, or use to communicate difficult emotions in dating and relationships. It is very OBVIOUS to the receiver that you have copied and pasted the response from ChatGPT.
In conclusion, ChatGPT is a very useful and powerful tool to help and support you to learn more about emotions, relationships, and data gathering. ChatGPT should ONLY be supplemental to therapy, but not be replaced with real therapy with a human.
