Money has been on my mind. I’m sure money has been on your mind as well. Some people are considering cutting back and dropping therapy…because times are just too uncertain. It truly is the best time for people to get therapy, but IT IS financially the WORST TIME for people to get therapy also. The irony..
I think therapy right now is not only essential but also so worth it in this economic uncertainty. You see, a lot of people have a scarcity mindset when it comes to their relationship with money. In the last pandemic, people hoarded toilet paper, beat up asian grandmothers, and took out all their investments in Robinhood.
People make decisions out of fear, and when there is so much fear in the air right now. In times of uncertainty, two heads are better than one. Therapy is an investment and commitment, but even a few sessions can do you some good.
Last week, I was freaking out about the idea of being detained and deported. Although I know that is an irrational thought, it lingered in my unconscious and made me not want to travel at all for the next four years! I talk to my shrink, and it calms me down. It made me realize how unlikely that was for me, and I was more fearful than people who are on a visa.
You see, money is a canvas to show your projections towards your emotions. If you hoard money, you have insecurity and fear about the future. If you spend money, you are insecure and fear not having a future. If you avoid thinking about money and the debt in your bank account, you are not looking at reality. Uncertainty in the world can stir up many emotions and make us feel unsafe. We live in a consumerism world. New Yorkers work stressful long hours and buy tons of craps or go to the spa to destress. These are just bandaids and quick relief to a solution to a big problem.
The truth is, safety is an illusion. We do not know what tomorrow will bring, but going to therapy, whether short-term or long-term term can help you clarify your next steps and not move to Canada on a whim! Although Canada is looking very sexy right now to a lot of folks.
